We aim to secure locally owned accommodation that is well located, offers good value for money, and plenty of comfort. To help you find your ideal adventure, each trip is given a Comfort Level rating, which indicates the overall standard of accommodation. For more on our ratings, see our Comfort Level guidelines. On this adventure, we stay mostly in modern buildings within or near the historic centres we visit. Some hotels have a pool.

The typical accommodations we use are on the daily itinerary but below are some examples of the places we stay.

Douro: Hotel Regua Douro (night 2)

Overlooking the Douro River, this relaxed base places you in the heart of Portugal’s wine country. The waterfront promenade is just a five-minute walk away, while the hotel’s outdoor pool and lobby bar provide an easy way to unwind after a day exploring.

Coimbra: Vila Gale Coimbra (night 3)

Stay beside the Mondego River at this contemporary base, which is just around a 15-minute walk from the historic university and its grand hilltop setting. Spacious rooms offer modern comfort, while an outdoor pool, spa and bar provide relaxing spots to recharge.

Batalha: Hotel Lis Batalha (night 4)

Wake up just steps from one of Portugal’s great medieval landmarks at this welcoming stay near Batalha Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The vast Gothic complex is a two-minute walk away, while comfortable rooms and a terrace bar provide a pleasant base for time in this historic town.
